Aarhus City Companion is a platform that enables international students to meet locals - and experience the city of Aarhus. The project has been developed for the course Urban Interactions at Aarhus University in Autumn 2009 by Troels Kayser Nielsen, Esben Hardenberg, Rune Thuelund and Michael Niebuhr.

Aarhus University has an international outlook with targeted efforts to attract researchers and students from around the world resulting in 3000 international students like you making their way to Aarhus every year. But with studies and day-to-day life, how do you discover and experience the 'real' Aarhus?

Aarhus City Companion offers a platform, in the shape of an online community and a meeting point, where students can advertise activities they are interested in. Want to meet someone who knows the ins and outs of shopping in Aarhus? Or maybe just the best place for second hand shopping? Or how about the best place for bargain-shopping? Put an ad on the website and before long someone will make your wish come true.

Here is how it works: You log onto the City Companion homepage, and from there, choose to either advertise for a companion or accept an invitation from someone else. Having arranged to meet up, an ID will be sent to your mobile telephone, so you can check you meet the right person.

The meeting point is placed in front of the city's main library where a series of seashells decorate the park as interactive meeting points. The meeting points also have an audio element with speakers in the shape of bird's houses playing the sounds of spring and summer - in recognition of the fact that many international students struggle with the long, dark days during autumn and winter in Denmark.

Using Bluetooth technology the meeting point will react when you both arrive in the vicinity of one of the seashells. This is designed to make it easier for you to identify each other. The sculptures themselves are also designed to enhance the experience for the many residents and visitors of Aarhus who use the park.
Once you have met you can begin to travel to your destination of choice together. A database of reviews is available on the website for inspiration. This way, you will be able to draw on earlier users' experiences, passing on knowledge of popular non-touristy sites in Aarhus between users.
